How does fingerprint scanning work and security

Easy Employer uses the digitalPersona 4500 or 5000 series fingerprint module.

When an employee scans their finger on the fingerprint reader, the fingerprint scanner itself (not Easy Employer) captures and encrypts the fingerprint image before sending it to the devices Fingerjet biometric engine for verification - this is all done locally on the scanner.

What this verification process does is creates a map of 25 - 40 unique features of the fingerprint and puts this into a data format called a template. This template can only be interpreted by the biometric engine. If someone was to look at the template of a fingerprint, it would not be recognisable, as the information is a set of numbers and is hashed. The actual fingerprint is not stored and the actual fingerprints cannot be reconstructed from the template that is captured and stored.
