The role rates feature allows you to assign a specific rate of pay that is set on a rate group to a role. This is commonly used when employees perform duties that warrant a different pay rate than their usual base rate. For example, if an employee temporarily performs duties in a higher classification or value range, you can apply the role rate without permanently changing their base rate.
This is particularly useful when employees perform both regular and additional duties with different pay rates, as it ensures the correct rate is applied without frequent manual changes to the employee's base rate.

What determines if the role rate applies
For a role rate to apply:
- The role rate has been set in the award (see View and manage role rates) and/or set as a User role rate for the user (see User role rates).
- The position the user is taking has an award pay group with Enforce role hourly rates enabled, or the user belongs to a base award pay group with this option enabled.
- The shift is for the role with a role rate applied. For leave shifts, the role rate applies if the leave request type has Apply role rates set to Yes.
- Whether the lower or higher rate applies depends on the Enforce higher rate setting (see View and manage role rates).
- The base rate's rate group identifier must have a corresponding rate set for the role rate's rate group.
